sumproduct formula evaluating text range 

Hello,

I have a range of headings in columns A1 thru L1 labeled Jan thru Dec.  I have data under each A2 thru L2.  I need to calculate YTD numbers based on mult criteria depending on the month designated in another cell.  In other words, with the month of Sep designated, I need to sum the values for Jan:Sep or if Jun is designated, I need to sum the values for Jan:Jun.  I have tried all kinds of variations to the sumproduct formula, but it keeps giving me the full year total as the answer.  Please help!
