Calculating the sum of a column with specific text in a corresponding column in the same row.

Say I have a column (A3:A) that includes text like Cat, Dog, Turtle, etc.  There's a value in another column (C3:C) for how much food that animal needs to eat.  I want to sum up all of the cells that tell me how much all of the dogs each, or how much all of the cats eat, for example.  The location of all instances of Cat are unknown.  How do I sum up how much food they eat all together?
